Prof. Barry Bloom

Dr. Barry Bloom is recognized as a pioneer in the field of global health. Trained in immunology, he has made important contributions to infectious diseases, vaccines and global health policy. His lifelong commitment has been to bring knowledge and methods of cutting edge basic science to alleviating the burdens of disease in developing countries. His research has been primarily focused on the immunology and pathogenesis of leprosy and of tuberculosis.
Dr. Bloom has published more than 350 articles, edited seven books and continues to provide commentary on current issues in public and global health. Dr. Bloom’s scientific contributions have made him a trusted advisor in public health policy. He has served as an advisor to the White House on International Health Policy. For more than 40 years, he has been an advisor to the World Health Organization (WHO), where he chaired the Research Advisory Committees on Leprosy, Tuberculosis, Malaria, and Tropical Diseases and was a member of the WHO Advisory Committee on Health Research. He taught the first course in immunology in India at AIIMS. His past service includes membership on the National Advisory Council of the US National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID); the Scientific Advisory Board of the National Center for Infectious Diseases of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC); the National Advisory Board of the Fogarty International Center at the National Institutes of Health; and the Governing Board of the Institute of Medicine. He is a former investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and served on their Medical Advisory Board. He served as President of the American Association of Immunologists and of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology. He currently serves on the scientific advisory boards of the Wellcome Trust Institute for Human Genetics, Oxford, UK, and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Clinical Scholars program, the KwaZulu Natal Institute for Research in Tuberculosis and HIV (K-RITH) and the Human Heredity and Health in Africa (H3Africa) program. Dr. Bloom came from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health as Dean of the Faculty in 1999, where he served for a decade.
He received the first Bristol-Myers Squibb Award for Distinguished Research in Infectious Diseases, shared the Novartis Award in Immunology in 1998, and was the recipient of the Robert Koch Gold Medal for lifetime research in infectious diseases. Dr. Bloom was elected to membership in the US National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Medicine and the American Philosophical Society.

Dr. Peter M. Small, M.D. is the Jim and Robin Herrnstein Chair and Founding Director of Global Health Institute,Stony Brook University, NY.
Dr. Small spent a decade as a clinician in San Francisco at the dawn of the AIDS era and a decade as a scientist at Stanford University during the explosion of genomics. In 2002, he joined the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, where he was responsible for developing the foundation’s TBstrategy, building the team, overseeing the vaccine, drug and diagnostic product development activities and serving as the foundation’s voice for TB. In 2011, he relocated to India where he focused on integrating innovative technologies into evolved health care delivery systems to accelerate the decline of TB.He left the Foundation to join Stony Brook University as the Founding Director of the Global Health Institute, a university-wide transdisciplinary program that combines teaching, research and service with a mission to reduce poverty, ecological devastation and disease in Madagascar and other poor countries.
Prof. Madhukar Pai, MD, PhD

Prof. Madhukar Pai, MD, PhDis a Canada Research Chair in Epidemiology & Global Health at McGill University, Montreal. He is the Director of McGill Global Health Programs and Associate Director of the McGill International TB Centre. Prof. Pai did his medical training and community medicine residency in Vellore, India. He completed his PhD in epidemiology at UC Berkeley and a postdoctoral fellowship at the UCSF. Prof. Pai serves as a Consultant to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He serves on the STAG-TB committee of WHO, Geneva; Scientific Advisory Committee of FIND, Geneva; and Access Advisory Committee of TB Alliance, New York. He has previously served on the Coordinating Board of the Stop TB Partnership. He is on the editorial boards of Lancet Infectious Diseases, PLoS Medicine, eLife, PLoS ONE, International Journal of TB and Lung Disease, among others.
Prof. Pai’s research is mainly focused on improving the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis, especially in high-burden countries like India and South Africa. His research is supported by grant funding from the Gates Foundation, Grand Challenges Canada, and Canadian Institutes of Health Research. He has more than 300 publications. He is the recipient of the Union Scientific Prize, Chanchlani Global Health Research Award and Haile T. Debas Prize. He is a member of the Royal Society of Canada.
Prof. Dr. Stefan H.E. Kaufmann

Prof. Kaufmann is the Founding Director of the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology, Berlin where he heads the Department of Immunology. He is also Professor for immunology and microbiology at the Charité University Clinics, Berlin. He studied biology and received his PhD from the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in 1977. His scientific interests are immunity to intracellular bacterial pathogens with emphasis on tuberculosis and rational design of vaccines and biosignatures.
Prof. K. Srinath Reddy

Prof. K. Srinath Reddy is the President, Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) and former head of the Department of Cardiology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). He was appointed as the First Bernard Lown Visiting Professor of Cardiovascular Health at the Harvard School of Public Health in 2009. He is also an Adjunct Professor of the Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University and Honorary Professor of Medicine at the University of Sydney.
Widely regarded as a leader of preventive cardiology at national and international levels, Prof. Reddy has been a researcher, teacher, policy enabler, advocate and activist, who has worked to promote cardiovascular health, tobacco control, appropriate nutrition across the life course, chronic disease prevention and healthy living across the lifespan. He edited the National Medical Journal of India for 10 years and is on editorial board of several international and national journals. He has more than 460 scientific publications in international and Indian peer reviewed-journals. He has served on many WHO expert panels and has been the President of the World Heart Federation (2013-14). He chaired the Core Advisory Group on Health and Human Rights for the National Human Rights Commission of India for several years and was a member of the first National Science and Engineering Research Board of Government of India. He recently chaired the High Level Expert Group on Universal Health Coverage, set up by the Planning Commission of India. He has also served as the President of the National Board of Examinations which deals with post-graduate medical education in India. Prof. Reddy is a member of the Leadership Council of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network, (SDSN) and is Chair for the Thematic Group on Health in the SDSN. Prof. Reddy is a member of the Global Panel on Agriculture and Food Systems for Nutrition. He is also Co-chair, Steering Committee on Health Related Issues on Air Pollution.
His contributions to public health have been recognized through several prestigious awards and honours such as the WHO Director General’s Award for Outstanding Global Leadership in Tobacco Control (World Health Assembly, 2003), Padma Bhushan (Presidential Honour, India, 2005), Queen Elizabeth Medal (Royal Society for Health Promotion, UK, 2005). He has also won prestigious literary awards such as: the Global Peace Essay contest organized by Economists Allied for Arms Reduction – ECAAR – and judged by nineNobel Laureates and the Times of India Essay contest on Human Rights and Media.
Dr. Salim S. Abool Karim

Salim S. Abdool Karim is a South African clinical infectious diseases epidemiologist widely recognised for his research contributions in HIV prevention and treatment.
He is the Director of the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA) and the CAPRISA Professor inGlobal Health at Columbia University, New York. He is also Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa and Adjunct Professor of Medicine at Cornell University, New York. His clinical research on TB-HIV treatment has shaped international guidelines on the clinical management of co-infected patients. He was co-leader of the CAPRISA 004 tenofovir gel trial that provided proof-of-concept that anti-retrovirals can prevent sexually transmitted HIV infection and herpes simplex virus type 2 in women. He is co-inventor on patents, which have been used in several HIV vaccine candidates and in passive immunisation strategies with broadly neutralising antibodies. He is Chair of the UNAIDS Scientific Expert Panel and the WHO HIV-Hepatitis Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee and serves on the Gates Foundation’s Global Health Scientific Advisory Board as well as the WHO TB-HIV Task Force. He serves on the Boards of Lancet Global Health, Lancet-HIV and the New England Journal of Medicine and a Foreign Associate Member of the US National Academy of Medicine, the American Academy of Microbiology and the Association of American Physicians.

Dr. Christian Lienhardt, is Team Leader, Research for TB Elimination at the Global TB Programme, World Health Organisation, Geneva (Switzerland). He is an Infectious and Tropical Disease specialist and Clinical Epidemiologist who graduated from the Universities of Strasbourg (France), and London (UK). After several years as a clinician in France, he undertook medical relief and health development work with various NGOs in several countries in the Middle-East and in Africa. He then carried out clinical and epidemiological research on tuberculosis in West Africa (Mali, The Gambia, Senegal) with the UK Medical Research Council (MRC) and the French ‘Institute for Research in Development’ (IRD), including a series of observational and case-contact studies, international multicenter clinical trials, as well as programmatic and operational research studies (1994-2004). He headed the Clinical Trial Division at the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) in Paris from 2004 to 2008. He joined WHO in 2009, where he is in charge of a large programme on support and promotion of TB research in high and medium TB burden countries, as well as a programme on the evaluation and rational introduction and use of new TB drugs and regimens.
